Fitness and Health Promotion Program and Career Courses

 

In-class Diploma Program

  • 40 weeks total time to complete including a 3 week practical placement
  • Classes scheduled Monday to Friday, 4 hours per day

Do you have an interest in the movement of the human body as well as an excellent ability to build interpersonal relationships? Then the Fitness and Health Promotion program could be the right option for you! Graduates of the Fitness and Health Promotion program perform many roles including fitness instructor, personal trainer, lifestyle coach, nutrition advisor and entrepreneur.  

Fitness and Health Promotion Program Objectives 

The Fitness and Health Promotion Diploma program is designed to prepare graduates to plan, market, and deliver safe and effective fitness, wellness and healthy lifestyle programs. The courses include: anatomy and physiology, exercise physiology, biomechanics and kinesiology, nutrition and wellness, fitness assessment and program design, personal fitness coaching, group fitness programming, programming for special populations, leisure program design, the business for fitness professionals, group fitness programming, and advanced fitness and sports programming.

Our goal is to have students develop current, practical knowledge and skills in such areas as the development, implementation and evaluation of fitness and wellness programs, nutrition, lifestyle management, fitness assessments, leadership, safety and injury management. Throughout the program our aim is to have students gain and build on their communication, leadership, interpersonal, and technical skills. The courses will help the students prepare for their canfitpro certifications. A co-op placement combined with practical classroom instruction ensures you graduate with confidence in yourself and in your theoretical and practical skills.  

Fitness and Health Promotion Practical Placement  

Algonquin Careers Academy has an excellent working relationship with various members of the fitness industry. During the last three weeks of the program the Fitness and Health Promotion program students will supplement their in-class training with an “on the job” practical placement arranged by Algonquin Careers Academy. The placement provides an opportunity to apply the lessons learned in the classroom, gain confidence, and open doors to future employment.  

Successful completion of the supervised practical placement is necessary for graduation.

Fitness and Health Promotion Relevant Certification  

Industry certifications have become a benchmark used by employers in the hiring process. The Health and Fitness Promotion program helps students prepare for canfitpro certifications in: 

  • Fitness Instructor Specialist (FIS)
  • Personal Trainer Specialist (PTS)  

Fitness and Health Promotion Career Opportunities  

The trend toward increasingly healthy lifestyle choices along with more popular fitness programs will contribute to the increasing demand for graduates in this field. Fitness and Health Promotion graduates can expect to find employment opportunities in the retail fitness and sport industry, fitness and health clubs, corporate fitness, wellness, and recreation programs, and public and private fitness programs. Graduates may also find opportunities with community institutions for special populations, hospital and rehabilitation settings, health promotion agencies, municipal recreation, leisure services, and in the tourism industry.

Fitness and Health Promotion Program Admission Requirements

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma or the equivalent, or if 18 years of age or over, you may apply as a mature student and write an entrance exam
  • Language proficiency is an essential skill required for all workers in Fitness and Health Promotion
  • Canadian Citizen, Permanent Resident or Immigration approval  
  • Assessment Interview to determine suitability for the Fitness and Health Promotion program
  • A clear criminal background check is required
  • Applicants must have a genuine interest in a healthy lifestyle, have excellent interpersonal skills and enjoy working with people

Tuition: $10,200    Textbooks and other fees: $1,659    International Student Fee: $2,000
